Reflections on the visit to Haig Girls!
10:23 PM

Team LEGO went to Haig Girls School on Thursday, 23 October 2008. Before we arrived at the school, I had mix feelings. On one hand, I was extremely excited to be able to interact with them as I have always found children interesting. On the other hand, I was feeling rather apprehensive as I was worried that I might not be able to handle so many children at one go. However, I knew that the situation in Yunnan would be way different as over there, a communication barrier would exist and that I would have to handle more children at 1 time. So, I decided to keep an open mind as I proceeded into the school hall to face the unknown.

Shortly after reaching the school, the students were split up into groups and we were dispatched to facilitate them. Then the fun began. Yvonne and I were fortunate to have facilitated a group of girls who were pretty sociable and well-behaved (as compared to other groups) even though they tended to get a little noisy and carried away in their own world when we were playing the ice-breaking games. It was only during this time which I found it slightly difficult to control them. Nevertheless, I continued to smile and gradually warmed up to them.

Next, Yvonne and I were preparing to give our presentation on cloth writing when one of the teachers suddenly decided to release the girls for early recess. This emphasises that all of us have to be flexible and be ever ready to adapt to any unforeseen circumstances in Yunnan. Thankfully, this sudden change in schedule did not affect us much.

As for the presentation, I felt that Yvonne and I have been clearer during the presentation. As we found out later, a lot of the students were unsure as to what could or couldn’t be written on the cloth. As a result, this resulted in the wastage of several pieces of cloth…Yvonne and I are really sorryy for that!!!!

Some of us may have found the students at Haig Girls pretty tough to handle. Perhaps it is because its our first time coming in contact with children that age after a long time. Thus, I hope that this experience of getting the chance to interact with the children was a fulfilling one to all. It was for me! It certainly taught me to be more patient when interacting with the children. I feel that this is very important as the children in Yunnan may not understand our instructions.

Haha. Anyway, Good luck to those who have yet to finish their OP!
